Most people are born with two kidneys, but can still live a healthy, normal life with just one. The remaining kidney compensates for the loss of the other, allowing donors to lead full and active lives.
Boyce’s father donated a kidney to Boyce’s younger brother in 2011. Both are thriving.
Quick Recovery Time
The vast majority of kidney donation surgeries are performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Donors are back to their normal routines within 2 to 4 weeks 95% of the time.
No Long-Term Health Risks for Donors
Studies show that kidney donors do not have an increased risk of kidney disease, nor do they have a reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. The first successful kidney transplant was performed in 1954. About 5000 living kidney donations are performed each year in the United States.
No Cost for Donors
The recipient’s insurance typically covers all the medical costs related to the donation process. Additionally, there are resources available to assist with lost wages, travel, and other expenses associated with the donation.
